Gunnas! Big Pelf and Reyes lead Mets to W

April 21, 2010

Reyes swiped a base and went 4-5

When you combine 19 scoreless innings of stellar pitching with a fiery shortstop beginning to warm up, you can almost guarantee a win. Mike Pelfrey who last pitched for  a save during the 20 inning marathon in St. Louis last Saturday, shut out the Cubs in seven innings of work.

He allowed three hits, three walks and stuck out six en route to his third win of the season.

Jose Reyes who has been off to a slow start this  season since returning from injury and swollen glands, went 4 for 5 with a triple to give the Mets the lead 2-0. The spark plug for the Mets offense relies heavily on Reyes especially with the middle portion of the line-up not producing thus far. David Wright went 0-4 and was boo’d by the crowd after striking out at his last at-bat. Jason Bay who has started of cold went 0-2.

The rotation aside from John Maine, is beginning to settle in and produce for the Mets. Jon Niese and Mike Pelfrey have been quiet surprises and they both give Johan Santana some help in anchoring the rotation. I’m hoping it continues tonight when Oliver Perez takes the mound.

The Mets are currently 6-8 and are 4-4 at home. They take on the Cubs tonight at Citi Field for their last game of the series.
