The Mets Spring Training Report: Volume 4

March 23, 2010

Pelfrey gave up 4 homers to the Nationals on Monday

All the discussions this spring about the young minor-leaguers, Reyes’ overactive thyroid, K-Rod’s pink eye, and Jason Bay’s arrival have overshadowed the fact that the 2010 Mets will live and die by the depth of their starting rotation.  Despite a glaring need for a number 2 starter behind Santana, Omar Minaya and the Coupons passed on Lackey, Pineiro, and Marquis and failed to make a trade for a Bronson Arroyo esq starter.  They believe that Big Pelf, Ollie, and Maine will all have bounce-back years and surprise the baseball world.  Read the rest of this entry ?

2010 Fantasy Baseball Top 50

March 11, 2010

#1-Hanley Ramirez-SS-FLA- What’s not to love about Han-Ram?  Given the shallowness at the shortstop position for the 2010 season and the monstrous numbers he put up in ’09 (.342 BA, 101 R’s, 24 HR’s, 106 RBI’s, 27 SB, .410 OBP), Hanley’s value is “through the roof”.  Oh yeah, I almost forgot, he’s only 26 and it’s very possible he hasn’t even met his potential yet. How scary is that?

Winter of Discontent….

December 15, 2009

We gotta do better than this

Maybe the winter is just starting but in the baseball world it’s almost over. Pitchers and catchers will begin reporting to sunny locales at the end of February and position players will be there soon after. The Mess, sorry I mean the Mets have yet to make a splash, let alone a ripple in this years free-agent market after losing 90 plus games last season. According to sources, the Phillies have signed Roy Halladay and John Lackey is headed to Boston. The Mets have sent offers to left fielder Jason Bay and catcher Bengie Molina, but have yet to receive acceptances.

Chris Coste is poised to wreak havoc in Citi Field for the Mets

According to multiple reports, The New York Metropolitans have signed free-agent catcher Chris Coste.  Coste hit .224 in 88 games with the Phillies and Astros last season, during which he played 15 games at first base. Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer is also reporting that former Mets catcher Brian Schneider has signed a two-year, $3 million deal with the Phillies. In two seasons with the Mets, Schneider appeared in just 169 games and hit  .244 with 12 home runs and 62 RBIs, as he was plagued by various leg and back injuries right from the start in 2008.

All hands on deck

Mets GM Omar Minaya will make plenty of phone calls this off-season

This article is from Ken Davidoff’s piece in the Nov. 25 edition of Newsday

The Yankees have been so deliberate this offseason that their own free agent, Johnny Damon – whom the Yankees want back – expressed frustration Tuesday that he hasn’t heard yet from Brian Cashman.

Consider the Mets, then, to be the anti-Yankees. If you’re a free agent and you haven’t heard from the Mets, you might want to make sure your cell-phone service (or that of your agent) hasn’t been canceled.

With needs for a slugging outfielder, a first baseman, a catcher and a starting pitcher, “We’re keeping all of our avenues open,” a team official said Tuesday.

Hence the expressions of interest in first basemen such as Russell Branyan and Nick Johnson, not to mention the Mets’ own free agent Carlos Delgado. And in starting pitchers such as Joel Piñeiro, Jason Marquis and Randy Wolf, in addition to Ben Sheets, who missed all of the 2009 season rehabilitating from right elbow surgery and therefore won’t be able to demand a great amount of money.
