Freshmen Filled Future: A Look Ahead

Steve Lavin is "pumped" for his 2011-2012 recruiting class

An overall successful season for the St. John’s Redmen Red Storm left a bad taste in the mouth of the fan base as the team fell victim to the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the first round of The NCAA Tournament.   It was the first time since 2002 that St. John’s had earned the right to compete for a national championship, a notion that seemed like a fantasy about three months ago.  Nevertheless, the quality wins kept mounting, and the nation’s top teams kept falling, and The Johnnies captured the hearts of many en route to an NCAA Tournament bid.  Despite many frustrating moments, fans like myself will never forget the 10 graduating seniors, as they returned St. John’s to the forefront of college basketball.

But as the saying goes, all “good” things must come to an end.  It’s now time to turn the page and welcome the number two ranked recruiting class in the country, as Steve Lavin has branched out to all coasts to secure the top talent available.

The new face of St. John's basketball?

St. John’s fans wanted a new “homerun” coach in a New York minute. Fans also wanted St. John’s to be relevant again.  It looks like the Redmen faithful might get their wish.

Former UCLA coach and  former ESPN analyst Steve Lavin is close to agreeing to become the next coach of the St. John’s Red Storm.  The 45 year-old emerged as the leading candidate after Paul Hewitt would not relocate and it was reported Al Skinner would not alter his assistant coaches.  Read the rest of this entry ?

It’s time for Mark Jackson

The best candidate remaining

St. John’s is crossing names off like a grocery list, and in my opinion there should be only one item remaining for their head coach.  Mark Jackson has zero college coaching experience but for 18 years was a coach on the court in the NBA and the floor leader of the 1985 St. John’s final four team.  Mark Jackson is a legend in the Redmen community and would bring instant credibility to the locker room. Norm Roberts officially fired

March 19, 2010

Roberts had just an 81-101 record at St. John's

St. John’s Athletics Director Chris Monasch officially announced Friday that St. John’s has fired Norm Roberts as head coach of the Men’s basketball team.

After reports broke last week that Norm would not be retained for a 7th season, the firing became questionable when Norm was seen coaching the team at practice leading up to their eventual NIT first-round loss to Memphis.

Finally on Friday, Chris Monasch issued this statement with regards to the program and Norm Roberts firing:  Read the rest of this entry ?

Fired for being classless

A day after losing to Texas Tech in the first-round of the NIT, Seton Hall fired head coach Bobby Gonzalez Wednesday afternoon.  The pink slip wasn’t given based on the teams play, however, as the Dean noted that “conduct detrimental to the school” was the main reason for the firing.  Read the rest of this entry ?
