Jerry Joseph aka Guerdwich Montimere

Permian High School in Odessa Texas, which was the inspiration to the movie turned TV show Friday Night Lights is making headlines again. Their basketball program will have to forfeit 16 wins from 2009, for having a 22 year old man pose as a 16 year old sophomore.

Swingman Jerry Joseph claimed to be a Haitian immigrant, and won the Texas Newcomer of the year award while averaging 20 points in his nine games. His real name is Guerwich Montimer and he is a naturalized American citizen from Florida. Coaches and immigration officers found out that Montimer had already played high school ball for Dillard high school in Ft. Lauderdale, and the South Florida Elite AAU basketball team.

He was arrested on Tuesday for failing to identify himself to a police officer. He was later released on $500 bond and could face 180 days in prison or a $2,000 fine.

The news was a surprise to basketball coach Danny Wright, who housed Montimer for a brief time.

“You know, you bring someone into your home, even away from basketball, my wife and my kids just fell in love with the young man and to be betrayed like that, you hate to be even a part of that happening to your family” he said to a local media outlet.
