Douglas dazzles to earn Starting PG spot

March 15, 2010

I think Toney Douglas is beginning to show his versatility as a point guard. His stat line from Saturdays win against the Mavericks, 21 points, 8 assists, and zero turnovers.  He also set the tone on the defensive end and at times made Jason Kidd finally look like Jason Old. He is also slated to start tonight when the Knicks visit the Sixers, and quite possibly may be the starter for the remainder of the season.

To be honest, I am not surprised at the neophytes success. He was the ACC’s  defensive player of the year last season at Florida State and their leading scorer. He had such an impact that Donnie Walsh paid a cool 3 million bucks to the Lakers for his draft rights.

When the Knicks were getting spanked on Friday by the playoff bound Grizzlies, Douglas sparked a ferocious fourth quarter comeback that brought the Knicks to within 5 after being down  by as many as 23. Even though the Knicks recorded another loss, Toney displayed why he should have an opportunity to run the offense.

What took Mike D’antoni so long??

“He was improving the whole time but you go with your big lineup, you go with gut instincts,” D’Antoni said. “Maybe if I went with him earlier, it wouldn’t have worked out.”

Douglas who always has  a smile on his face had this to say,

“It feels good, I love to play but it doesn’t matter if I start or not. I control my playing time by producing.”

The hard working Douglas has proved his worth to his coach, the only question is how long will it last?

  1. Lovin Tony Douglas but needs to step up his “dishing” game, which he already has been and I’m sure he’ll continue to make progress doing.
On another note, is his father really Carl Douglas, the writer and performer of the hit 70’s classic, Kung Fu Fighting?

  2. i think the dishing will come sooner than later… he’s getting adjusted to the league and the system…

as a matter of factly hes the 2nd cousins fathers brothers mothers nice of Carl Douglas..so we shall call him Toney “kung fu cousin” Douglas from now on in hahahaha
