The Mets acquire Gary Matthews Jr.

January 22, 2010

According to Jon Heyman at Sports Illustrated, the Metropolitans have traded for Angels center fielder Gary Matthews Jr.  Heyman also reports that the halo’s will be paying roughly $21.5 million of the $24 million owed to Matthews over the next two season.

It has also been reported that the Mets will send righty reliever Brian Stokes to the Angels, but that has not been confirmed by either team.

Matthews has struggled with injuries ever since he signed a 50 million dollar contract in 2006.  The last two seasons, Gary batted around .245 with roughly six home runs, 45 RBI’s and missed several games due to ankle, back and hamstring injuries.

Despite being prone to injuries, Matthews will provide the Mets with depth in centerfield, along with Angel Pagan.

I don’t mind this move, but I really did like Brian Stokes.  The reliever has a 95-97 mph fast ball and was pretty decent for the Mets last season.

Matthews, however, did hit .313 with 19 home runs and 79 RBI’s back in 2006, but those days could be behind the 35-year-old.
