Tavares' put-back gave the Islanders the win

Rookie phenom John Tavares scored his 10th goal of the season on a rebound with 6:12 left in the third to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.  Josh Bailey and Sean Bergenheim also scored, and Dwayne Roloson was sensational yet again in goal.  Bailey now has four goals in his last five games.

Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cooke netted goals for the Penguins, and goaltender Brent Johnson made 34 saves.

“Obviously we played a much better third period than we did against Philly.  We had high energy, and maybe had 1 or 2 turnovers.  Really proud at the guys tonight,” said Coach Scott Gordon after the game.

The Islanders dominated the game in terms of energy and hits, but found themselves down 2-1 late in the second period.  The turning point of the game came when the Isles killed off a 5-3 disadvantage for 55 seconds, and then a 5-4 disadvantage for an additional three minutes.  In fact, the Penguins were 0-5 on the power-play, and the Islanders snapped their three-game winning streak.

The Islanders entered the game winless when trailing after two periods, but Bergenheim, Tavares, and Roloson made sure that would change.   Two days after registering only one third-period shot in a loss to Philadelphia, the Islanders had 18 third-period shots in out shooting the Penguins 38-21 for the game.

Pittsburgh’s power play unit has converted just 4 of 55 chances over the last 14 games.

The Islanders resume play Saturday afternoon on the road against the Devils.  Game time is 1pm.
