Moulson’s two goals spark Islanders in road victory

November 16, 2009

The New York Islanders continued their impressive play on the road with a 4-1 victory in Boston Monday night.  Matt Moulson led the way with two goals and Goalie Dwayne Roloson frustrated the Bruins with 28 saves on 29 shots.  John Tavares added his NHL rookie leading 9th goal of the season as the Isles improved to 8-6-7 on the season.

New York took the lead just six minutes into the contest when Jack Hillen brought it around the boards to the back of the net and backhanded it into the slot for Moulson.  Boston would then dominate the rest of the period, including having a five-on-three advantage.  The Bruins had plenty of great scoring chances but could not capitalize.  However, Boston finally tied the game with 5:04 left in the second period when David Krejci found Paille who unleashed a beautiful shot between the goalie’s skate and the post.

Matt Moulson would score his second of the game to make it 2-1, and the Islanders never looked back.  Moulson thought he had a hat trick when New York scored their third goal of the game, but it was later credited to John Tavares.  Richard Park added three assists for the Islanders who have now registered points in 12 out of their last 15 games, including 6 so far in the first four games of the road trip.

“There’s a level of expectation that we can win,” coach Scott Gordon said. “There’s the confidence that if we’re playing our game, we’ll have success. Every night it’s something different. The past two games it was our power play. Tonight it was our penalty kill and Roloson had a big game.”

Roloson was very good all game, but practically a brick wall in the third as he made 8 stops to thwart a Boston comeback.

“It’s huge,” Roloson said. “They’re a great offensive team and our guys did a great job not allowing quality chances. Give credit to our forwards and defensemen for tightening it up.”

After a few days off back home, the Islanders will fly to Minnesota to take on the Wild Friday night.  It will be the first of another three games in four nights stretch.
