John Wetteland celebrates as the Yankees close out the Braves in '96

Former Yankee closer, 1996 World Series MVP, John Wetteland was hospitalized Thursday night with “mental health issues”. A woman at Wetteland’s home in Texas called for help for a possibly suicidal person, according to the Denton County Sheriff’s office.

“She said he was complaining of being depressed and contemplating suicide,” Sgt. Roger Griggs said.

Police said Wetteland came out of the house with his hands in the air and asked for help.

Wetteland released a statement Thursday night from his home in Argyle, Texas, attributing his hospitalization to his blood pressure.

“Thank you for your concerns,” Wetteland said in the statement. “My wife and I are very appreciative of the over and above care of our local officers and paramedics. The circumstances leading to my elevated blood pressure and heart rate have been addressed. I am currently resting safely at home.”
